Norman passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls after a sudden illness.
Norman Harold Bergman was born November 24, 1927, at Straubville, ND to Edward and Anna Augusta (Bugner) Bergman. As a youngster, he grew up near Straubville and attended rural Sargent County schools.
On July 1, 1948, Norman married Elaine Carlson at Britton. For the first three years of their marriage they lived on a farm near Straubville. While on the farm, they welcomed daughters Barb and Donna to their family. They moved to Kindred, ND where Norman worked with his brother, Eddie at the Farmer’s Coop.
The family then moved to Britton and Norman worked for Thorp Auto from 1954 to 1957. While living in Britton, a third daughter, Patty was born. In 1957, Norman moved his family to Glen Lake, MN where they lived for the next four and a half years. He worked for Suburban Chevrolet of Hopkins during this time. Their fourth daughter, Debbie joined them while they lived in Glen Lake. In 1961, they moved to Wayzata, MN and Norman continued to work for Suburban Chervrolet.
In 1969, the family moved to a farm near Parkers Prairie, MN where they were engaged in dairy farming for the next 30 years. Following their retirement, Norman and Elaine moved to Britton, and have made it their home since that time.
Norman was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Britton. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards, and was an avid golfer. He was extremely proud of the 178 yard hole-in-one he attained in 2002, at the age of 74. Perhaps Norman was his happiest when he was able to just spend some time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was truly a farmer at heart and had a great respect for the land and his livestock. Norm also had a great fondness for horses.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 63 years, Elaine Bergman of Britton; three daughters: Barbara (Jim) Collins of Cottage Grove, MN; Donna (Dan) Bowman of Alexandria, MN; Debbie (Larry) Hudalla of Clarissa, MN; eight grandchildren: Michael Collins, Michelle Lundin, Renee Zasada, Diana Waltzing, Jesse Bowman, Rob Hudalla, Rick Hudalla, Jody Hudalla; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Evelyn Best of Oakes, ND; Darlene Benzel of Oakes, ND; a brother, Orvin (Carole) Bergman of Vt. Valley, GA; and several nieces, nephews and their families.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a daughter, Pat Bergman; three brothers: Eddie, Kenneth and Ralph Bergman; and three sisters: Ellen Sterner, Fern Komar and Hilda Dawson.
