Orlyn passed away Sunday, February 24, 2013, at Avera-St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen at the age of 79.
Orlyn Eugene Osness was born October 6, 1933, at Langford, SD to Melvin Jalmer and Agnes (Holland) Osness. As a youngster, he grew up on the family farm and attended rural Day County schools. After completing his education, Orlyn worked for Langford area farmers.
Orlyn served his country in the U. S. Air Force, part of that time being spent in Africa and England. Following his honorable discharge, Orlyn returned to the Langford area and went to work at the Gunderson Garage.
On March 6, 1959, Orlyn was united in marriage with Phyllis E. Goreham, the first marriage to take place in the new Evangelical Lutheran Church in Langford. They made their home in Langford. Shortly after their marriage, Orlyn went to work for the Langford School District, where he served the next 17 years as manager of the school busses. Following that, Orlyn worked for a number of years at Horton in Britton. He later took a job with the Marshall County Highway Department, where he remained until retiring. In his retirement years Orlyn again enjoyed working part time for Langford area farmers.
Orlyn was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Langford, and had served as an usher. He also belonged to Marshall Post #3507 of the V.F.W. in Britton. Orlyn was very artistically inclined, and loved to draw and paint. In his younger years, Orlyn and Phyllis liked to go fishing. He had a large collection of toy farm equipment. He liked to spend time in the garage, either working with wood or tinkering on some project. His grandchildren have been a source of particular joy these past several years.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 53 years, Phyllis Osness of Langford; his three children: Dakota (Brent) Hoska of Minneapolis, MN; Mark (Dawn) Osness of Fremont, NE; Susan (Arlan) Holler of Langford; eight grandchildren: Noah and Simon Hoska; Brandon, Kyle, Nathan and Erin Osness; Zachary and Parker Holler; and a brother, Robert (Joyce) Osness of Aberdeen.
Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers: James “Bud” Osness, Milo Osness, and an infant sister.
