Howard Harold Peterson

U.S. Veteran

Hecla, SD: The funeral for longtime Hecla area farmer, Howard Peterson will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Claremont. Visitation will be 5-7:00 Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.

Rev. Nancy Manning will officiate and burial will be in the Union Cemetery of Groton, SD.

Howard passed away Friday, June 21, 2013 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen at the age of 89.

His arrangements have been entrusted to the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton.

Howard Harold Peterson was born January 1, 1924 at Claremont, SD to Fred Anton and Mary (Buffington) Peterson. As a youngster, he attended rural schools.

During WWII, Howard served his country in the U.S. Army in Korea. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to the Hecla area. He worked first as a farmhand for area farmers, and then farmed on his own until retiring.

On July 3, 1969, Howard married Florence Kenny. They made their home on the farm, where they raised their family.

Howard was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hecla. He also belonged to the Stanley Stearns Post #68 of the American Legion of Hecla.

Howard enjoyed the land. He loved trees, flowers, watching the crops and gardening. He had a knack at making nearly anything grow. As much as he enjoyed farming, his family was always first and foremost to him. He expanded his love of children beyond his own family circle, and had a special place in his heart for every child he knew. Howard was never without a dog, and he loved baked goods and ice cream!

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 43 years, Florence Peterson of Hecla; three children: Jeffrey (Cindy) Peterson of Elko, NV; Charleen (Bill) Moore of Oakes, ND; Nellie (Jeremy) Hatfield of Claremont, SD; two step-children: Charley (Barbara) Pulfrey of La Crosse, WI; Debra Pulfrey of Aberdeen; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a son, Fred Peterson; a grandson, Perry Peterson; three sisters and a brother.

Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Florence Peterson - 10896 404th Avenue - Hecla, SD 57446.
