Viola Verna Quamen

Britton, SD: The funeral for lifelong Marshall County resident, Viola Quamen, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013 at the Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church of rural Kidder, SD.

Visitation will be 4-7:00 p.m. Friday at the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton, with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service.

Viola passed away Monday, June 24, 2013 at the Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton at the age of 95.

Viola Verna Satrang was born February 28, 1918 on the Satrang farm in Victor Township of Marshall County, SD to Carl Satrang and Helga (Brubakken) Satrang. As a youngster, she grew up on the farm and attended rural Marshall County schools. She graduated from Britton High School before receiving her Teacher’s Certificate at Northern Normal in Aberdeen. After receiving her education, Viola taught rural Marshall County schools for ten years.

On November 24, 1946 she married Alvin Richard Quamen. They moved to the Ada Bosse farm in White Township, and bought the farm in 1948. Alvin passed away on January 31, 2002, and Viola continued to make her home on the farm with her son, Ivin.

Viola was an active member of the Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church of rural Kidder. She had served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years, belonged to the ladies organization there and was an active participant in the quilting group. She also was a life member of the Kidder American Legion Auxiliary.

As a farmwife and mother, Viola was always busy with something. For many years she planted and tended a large garden and canned its produce. She was an excellent baker and enjoyed crocheting. Viola was happiest just being around people, and truly loved her family and friends.

Grateful for having shared her life are her two children: Alice Taylor of New Hope, MN; Ivin Quamen of Britton; two granddaughters: Kristin Taylor and Erica Taylor; a brother, Tollof Satrang of Sisseton and a number of nieces, nephews and their families.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, a son, Richard Quamen and seven brothers: Gilman, Clarence, Julian, Carl Jr., Arthur, Harry and Ingvald Satrang as well as two brothers in infancy.

Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Ivin Quamen - 42902 103rd Street - Britton, SD 57430.
