Louise Atkinson, 75, of Britton, SD, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, Friday, May 14, 2010, under the care of Britton Hospice at Avera-Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton after an intense struggle with bone cancer since early March.
Louise Kimball was born September 25, 1934, at home in Knox County, near Edina, Missouri, to Francis and Ruth (Peterson) Kimball. The family returned to the Claremont, SD area when Louise was 2 years old. Louise graduated salutatorian of the Class of 1952 from Claremont High School.
On October 1, 1953, Louise married the love of her life, Gerald Atkinson. She loved babies and always wanted a big family. Together Gerald and Louise raised their six children on the family farm southeast of Britton. Gerald and Louise retired from farming in 1983 and moved into Britton. The most difficult thing she and Gerald ever faced was the loss of their son, David, in 1989.
Louise loved to play Scrabble, Yahtzee and poker, to knit and to cook for her family, and flowers. She watched “Days of Our Lives” since its inception on television. She was a member of the Britton United Methodist Church. She was also a long time member of the Merry Wives extension club. One of her favorite activities was spending Wednesday evenings with friends and family at the VFW for happy hour and burger night.
